Kevin is currently the Coordinator of Gifted Education for New Hope-Solebury High School, a blue-ribbon and nationally ranked public high school in New Hope, Pennsylvania. He has been working with gifted students and online learning for over 16 years. Over that time, Kevin has made some distinct observations.
- Many students know what they want to study well before they start applying to college.
- There is an absolute need for content-specific courses for high school students, but most online courses for highs school students are lousy.
- Many high school students are ready for university-level course work but scheduling conflicts and proximity to higher institutions create a barrier.
- More students are applying to college with high SAT, AP, and ACT scores. There is a growing need to differentiate oneself from the pool of other applicants.
- Universities are looking for differentiating factors such as academic focus and passion when selecting a well-rounded student body.
- When a student is provided with challenging course work specifically in areas that the student is interested in, the student will rise to meet the level of expectations.
- Students are more successful in an online setting when they have a mentor who can help them through obstacles and is invested in their success.
- There are under-utilized methods to bridge high school and college for students.
- High School gifted programs fail to truly address the needs of many gifted ed students.
- Innovative Education opportunities can and should be available to all capable students.
